What actually happens when return is not possible? This question lies at the heart of research conducted within the FAiR project on the governance of irregular migration across Europe. The research suggests that forced return is not always feasible, nor is it the only response to irregular migration. Understanding the gap between policy and practice is essential to grasp how irregular migration is governed, what alternatives are already emerging, and what can be reasonably achieved to improve the situation.
