This workshop sheds light on the policy and practice of return diplomacy, drawing on current research from the EU Horizon project Finding Agreement in Return (FAiR), and seeks to collectively translate this to strategies for advocacy and lobbying for civil society organisations. FAiR research shows that international cooperation in return – both on the level of policy negotiations and implementation – is a highly complex balancing exercise shaped by wider geopolitical constellations, conflicting norms and dependency. The workshop will offer insights from return diplomacy, notably centring views from the Global South that are rarely heard in return policy. Finally, the workshop will provide a platform for collaborative discussion on the role of civil society organisations and NGOs in return and identify opportunities for advocacy following our research findings.
